10 Tips for Teacher Wellness

School is just back in session, and we know how hectic this time of year can be for teachers. Between lesson planning, grading papers, and managing a classroom full of energetic students, it’s easy to put your own health and well-being on the back burner. But taking care of yourself is essential for being the best teacher you can be!

At Urgent Care of Fairhope, we understand the unique challenges teachers face, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. To help you stay at the top of your game this school year, here are our top tips for teacher wellness.

1. Get your annual physical.

It may seem routine, but staying up-to-date on your health is crucial. Regular check-ups are crucial for catching potential health issues early and keeping track of your overall well-being. A yearly physical ensures you’re starting the year with a clean bill of health, so you can focus on your students without any lingering worries. Alabama teachers can also get waivers on wellness premiums by scheduling a free PEEHIP wellness screening before the school year begins!

2. Make time to move.

Exercise isn’t just for your students – it’s essential for your own health, too.  Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, whether it’s a quick morning yoga session, a brisk walk during lunch, or even some desk exercises between classes. Regular movement boosts your energy levels, improves your mood, and helps you stay focused throughout the day.

3. Wash your hands frequently.

In a school setting, germs are everywhere. Because teaching is a hands-on job, it’s important to be sure you’re keeping yours clean with proper school hygiene. Make it a habit to wash your hands frequently, especially before eating or touching your face. Keep hand sanitizer at your desk for those moments when you can’t get to a sink.

4. Stay home when you’re sick.

The many common back-to-school illnesses are bound to catch up with you eventually. We know it’s tough to be away from your students, but it’s essential to stay home when you’re sick. Taking time off to rest and recover allows your body to heal and helps prevent the spread of illness in your classroom. Encourage your students to do the same—if they’re showing symptoms, it’s best for them to stay home and return when they’re feeling better. This approach keeps everyone healthier in the long run.

5. Stay hydrated.

Between lessons, grading, and meetings, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and trouble concentrating. Keep a water bottle at your desk and take small sips throughout the day to stay hydrated and maintain your energy levels.

6. Eat a healthy diet.

Many teachers struggle to find time to sit down and eat a healthy lunch – there’s just not enough time! But fueling your body with nutritious foods keeps your immune system strong and gives you the energy you need to get through the day. To avoid the temptation of those vending machine runs, pack healthy snacks and meals in a lunchbox and prioritize time to eat slowly and mindfully.

7. Get enough sleep.

A good night’s sleep is the foundation of your overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to give your body the rest it needs to recover and prepare for the next day. Getting enough rest improves your mood, enhances your memory, and keeps your immune system strong.

8. Manage stress.

Teaching is a highly stressful career; A recent survey by The University of Alabama revealed that nearly 85% of teachers in state districts are working at their maximum level of stress at least half of the time. To reduce the risk of stress-related disease, find healthy ways to relax and manage your stress level. Try deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, meditation, or hobbies that bring you joy. Managing stress effectively helps you stay calm, focused, and resilient in the face of challenges.

9. Set boundaries.

Speaking of stress – teaching is a demanding profession, and it’s easy to let work spill over into your personal time. Set clear boundaries between work and home to ensure you have time to relax and recharge. Whether it’s leaving work at school or setting specific hours for grading, maintaining a work-life balance is key to long-term wellness.

10. Get your flu shot and other vaccines.

Vaccinations are a key part of staying healthy throughout the school year. Make sure you’re up to date on your flu shot and any other recommended vaccines. These vaccines help protect you and your students from preventable diseases, reducing the chances of outbreaks and sick days.
